Instrumental Ensembles

How will you be involved?

A quarter of the student body participates in music in some way.

Regardless of major, learn how to earn up to two performance scholarships. 

  • Pep up the crowd at football and basketball games in the athletic band.
  • Perform in area jazz festivals.
  • Debut world-premiere pieces.
  • Play in informal coffeehouse settings.
  • Be part of the action in the orchestra pit.

Athletic Band

Bethel’s athletic band, known as Threshold, adds a musical home-field or home-court advantage at football and basketball games. No audition required – just bring your instrument and join the fun!

Band members are paid per game. Athletic band scholarships are also available. 

Steel Drum Ensemble

The Bethel College Steel Drum Band performs on authentic steel drums made in Trinidad. All instruments are provided. No experience required – we will teach you how to play!

The Steel Drum Band had the honor of playing at the Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) annual convention in 2019.

Jazz Ensemble

The jazz program at Bethel College boasts two big bands and various jazz combos. Jazz Ensemble I performs regularly at concerts and festivals during the school year and has received Superior ratings at the Wichita and University of Northern Colorado/Greeley Jazz Festivals. 

  • Study and play with renowned guest artists such as Bobby Watson, Allen Vizzutti and Bob Mintzer.
  • Graduates have gone to tour nationally and internationally with The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra or work as professional jazz musicians in Wichita, Kansas City, Denver and Milwaukee.

Wind Ensemble & Philharmonia Orchestra

These two ensembles, composed of string, wind and percussion students, perform a wide variety of music from the Baroque era to newly composed world premieres. In addition to regular season concerts, the chamber orchestra also serves as the orchestra for Bethel’s opera productions and for the annual sing-along of the Christmas portions of Handel’s Messiah.
