Seven national qualifying marks set

Track and field made its debut at the Schmidt Track Complex at Thresher Stadium Wednesday with a dual meet between host Bethel and KCAC rival Bethany.

No team scores were kept and not all the events were competed.

While it was a small meet, Bethel coach Tracy Tuttle felt it was still a quality meet with seven qualifying marks for the NAIA National Meet May 25 through 27 in Fresno, Calif.

“There were a lot of qualifiers,” Tuttle said. “That’s not bad for a dual meet. We had some good, quality performances. The thing I like today is even though it was a small field with Bethel against Bethany with a lot of wind, they still competed against each other. It was a good meet to get together and see where we’re at. I like duals, at least once a year. We were kind of shy of meets this year. We didn’t compete indoors. (Bethany coach) Joe (Wilkerson) said he’d come on down. That’s a great opportunity for us to get all of the bugs worked out of our new system and everything. We competed well.”

Bethel’s Jeff Buller had a 204-0 3/4 throw in the javelin to win, qualifying for the NAIA nationals, breaking the required mark of 190-3. Buller qualified for nationals last year.

“That’s just a foot and a half off his record,” Tuttle said. “That’s probably going to be one of the best throws in the country right now.”

Chad Hershberger won the 100-meter dash in 10.72, meeting provisional standards and 0.02 seconds off the automatic qualifying standards (the marks from the meet can’t be used since the automatic timing system wasn’t used for the event because it was run in the opposite direction due to the wind), and the 200-meter dash in 22.68.

Others winning events for the Thresher men were Scott Goering in the men’s triple jump in 40-0, Garrett Whorton in the shot put in 46-3 1/4, Owen Kindall in the high jump in 6-0, D.J. Bookout in the 1,500-meter run in 4:51.15 and Jordan Regehr in the 400-meter dash in 53.71.

Megan Klaasen won both the 400-meter dash in 1:01.93 and the 200-meter dash in 28.00. Other winners for the Bethel women were Paula Regeir in the pole vault at 8-6 and Rachel White in the 100-meter dash in 14.41. Bethel won the 4x100-meter relay in 56.60.

“We had a lot people where this was their first time in an event,” Tuttle said. “It was a good way to work into a new event without a lot of pressure on them. We had a couple of injuries, but nothing major and they’ll be ready to go after spring break.”

Four Bethany athletes posted national qualifying performances — Hannah Wagner in both the women’s triple jump in 37-0 3/4 and high jump at 5-6, Jessica Becker in the women’s shot put in 41-8 3/4 (provisional), Anna Miller in the women’s discus in 137-0 (provisional), Nathan Whitcomb in the men’s discus in 154-0 (provisional).

Bethel competes April 1 at the McPherson Invitational. Bethel hosts the ACCK Championships April 14.
