Cloris K. (Schroeder) Enns ’56 was chosen to serve as Civitan International Governor for the Oklahoma–Kansas District for the 2002-03 fiscal year. Civitan is a worldwide community service organization. Lois J. (Powlison) Gee ’56 is translating a tape-course guide on Christian education for adults. She teaches Spanish at Maryland Bible College and Seminary in Baltimore. Donald D. Kaufman ’55 retired in July 2001 after 18 years as executive director of Wheatland Homes in North Newton, Kan. Calvin O. Schrag ’50, West Lafayette, Ind., is the author of the recently published book, God as Otherwise than Being: Toward a Semantics of the Gift. Two Festschrifts have been published in honor of Schrag’s teaching and research career in the field of philosophy: “Calvin O. Schrag and the Task of Philosophy After Postmodernity” and “Experiences Between Philosophy and Communication: Engaging the Philosophical Contributions of Calvin O. Schrag.” 1960-69Melvin Goering ’61, CEO of Prairie View Mental Health Center, Newton, Kan., has been appointed to the Board of the Association of Community Mental Health Centers of Kansas and the Committee for Social and Rehabilitation Services Statewide Hospital Committee for Children’s Mental Health. Barry R. Hieb ’66, Tuscon, Ariz., is a research director at Gartner and an information systems analyst for healthcare information systems and technology. Fern F. (Friesen) Hieb ’68 is the organist at the First United Methodist Church, Tucson, Ariz., and the dean of the southern Arizona chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She is also the owner and cataloger of Flourish: Music Cataloging. Robert W. Neufeld ’61, professor of computer science at McPherson (Kan.) College, was elected as a regional representative to the National Board of Consortium for Computing in Small Colleges. Alvin Penner ’61 retired Oct. 24 from his position as executive vice president and chief operating officer at Hutchinson (Kan.) Hospital. During his 16 years with the hospital, he oversaw construction of the Chalmers Cancer Center, Dillon Living Center, Same Day Surgery Center and the Hospice Residential Care Center. Elizabeth Raid ’66 served as ministry intern at First Mennonite Church, Bluffton, Ohio, during the 2001-02 school year. Last May she received a master’s of divinity degree from Earlham School of Religion, Richmond, Ind. Currently, she works for Mennonite Central Committee Central States, North Newton, Kan., as project development coordinator. Randall K. Schmidt ’60 retired after 40 years as principal of The Menninger School for Emotional Children, Topeka, Kan. Carol (Schrag) Young ’61 retired from teaching after 39 years in the field. Young’s first teaching position was at Ransom (Kan.) High School. She then taught at Kingman (Kan.) Middle School where she developed the home economics curriculum while also working part-time at Kingman High School. She taught at the middle school for five years before becoming the full-time home economics teacher at Kingman High School. Sandra D. (Schrag) Zerger ’66 had her wearable fiber art featured at the Carriage Factory Gallery, Newton, Kan., this past summer. 1970-79Caprice J. Becker ’77 is the health services coordinator at Martin Luther Homes, Manhattan, Kan. The homes provide case management and day and residential services for developmentally delayed adults. Bruce R. Buhr ’73 was elected vice president of the board of directors for Wichita (Kan.) Clinic. Rosanne (Siemens) Goble ’75 became the first full-time executive director of the Kansas Library Association, Topeka, Kan., Dec. 1. She had been the director of the Southwest Kansas Library System and the Dodge City (Kan.) Public Library since 1996. Sara Fretz-Goering ’73 was promoted to chair of the English department at White Oak Middle School, Silver Spring, Md. Wynn Goering ’77, Bethel’s academic dean from 1991-97, has been named chief development officer at the Anderson Schools of Management at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, effective Sept. 9. Prior to this appointment, he served as interim executive director of the UNM Taos Branch. Robert D. Mayer ’73 is a nonprofit consultant in Kansas City, Mo., as part of the Moran Company. He is also an independent commercial mortgage banker at M R Capital Advisors L.L.C. Richard C. Rutschman ’76 received a doctorate in education, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. Rutschman’s dissertation was titled “An Adult Education Comparative Study of Two Experimental Education Fields: Adventure Education and Popular Education.” He is program director at Chicago Teachers’ Center at Northeastern Illinois University. Brian D. Stucky ’75, art and photography instructor in the Goessel (Kan.) schools, displayed artwork he created from first grade through the present in an exhibit titled “Pieces of My Life” in the high school’s Emil Kym Art Gallery. The exhibit included oils, printmaking, drawing, graphic art and photography. Richard B. Walker ’70, Newton, Kan., was awarded the Outstanding Service Award by the Kansas Bar Association, for his service to the legal profession. Janine Wedel ’78 gave a Yoder Public Affairs Lecture at Goshen (Ind.) College last May. She focused on Eastern Europe’s political, economic and social order and the effects of foreign policy and aid to the region. Wedel is a professor at George Mason University, Fairfax, Va. 1980-89James L. Allen ’82 is working on a graduate degree in management information systems from Friends University, Wichita, Kan. Mary Janzen Aziz ’84 is a writer and editor for Education Technology Services at Penn State in State College, Pa. She also teaches English as a Second Language to adults through the State College school district’s community education program. Mark A. Becker ’85, Madison, Wis., received a Fulbright fellowship to study representations of Indians within popular movements in 20th-century Ecuador. While he was in Ecuador this fall, he expanded his work with NativeWeb, which helps indigenous organizations establish a presence on the Internet. Troy Black ’89 teaches weightlifting and physical education and is assistant football coach at Valley Center (Kan.) High School. He has a master’s degree in sports administration from Wichita (Kan.) State University. Previously he coached three teams that went to state championship competition. As head football coach at Fredonia (Kan.) Senior High School from 1998-2001, he had a 27-13 record. Gary R. Entz ’82 authored an article titled “Zion Valley: The Mormon Origins of St. John, Kansas” which was published in the Kansas State Historical Society’s journal Kansas History in the summer 2001 issue. The Society received the Arrington-Prucha Prize in Western American Religious History from the Western History Association for this article. Entz, a professor of history at McPherson (Kan.) College, received a monetary award last October. Galen Goertzen ’85 and other members of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at Group Health Cooperative, Spokane, Wash., were included in an ABC television documentary, “Bitter Medicine: Pills, Profits and the Public Health,” which aired last May. Scott W. Hiebert ’82 has been appointed leader of Vanderbilt University-Ingram School of Medicine’s research program in Nashville, Tenn., in signal transduction and cell proliferation. He is a professor of biochemistry. Sharolyn Flaming Jackson ’82 is a county extension agent for K-State Research and Extension in Riley County, Kan., where she focuses on nutrition, health and safety programs. She also teaches piano lessons. Cindy Lou (Goering) Otte ’85 works for IMA Risk Management Services, Inc., Wichita, Kan., where she is responsible for marketing, advertising and public relations. Diana K. (Erb) Schunn ’87 is a sexual assault nurse educator at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, Wichita, Kan. She teaches and trains nurses and law enforcement officials from across the United States concerning sexual assault. She testified before the Kansas State House of Representatives Health and Services Committee about legislation relating to sexual assault. Kathryn M. (Schmidt) Steely ’87 was awarded a doctorate in viola performance from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., last June. Her dissertation title was “Large-Scale Architecture in the Bach Violoncello Suite Preludes and the Formation of Interpretation.” Steely was granted tenure by Baylor University, Waco, Texas, last April. 1990-99Preston W. Barger ’99 received his master’s degree in management information systems last May from Friends University, Wichita, Kan. Audrey (Franz) Blacklock ’98, is a student at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan. Matthew T. Caldwell ’94 works as a case manager in the case management and quality department for trauma and surgery at Baylor University Medical Center, Waco, Texas. Zhu Wei Chen ’97 graduated last May from the University of Louisville in Kentucky with a degree in dentistry. He works for the Peninsula Community Health Services, Aberdeen, Wash. Scott Dooley ’93 was a featured artist at the Wichita (Kan.) Center for the Arts. He earned a master of fine arts degree at Kansas State University in 2000 and teaches at Wittenburg University, Springfield, Ohio. David L. DeHoogh-Kliewer ’95 received a master’s degree in music from the University of South Dakota last August. He teaches choral music at Roosevelt High School, Sioux Falls, S.D. Jenel (Funk) Edwards ’92, is in her 11th year of teaching fourth grade at Clearwater (Kan.) Elementary West. She received a master of arts in teaching degree from Friends University, Wichita, Kan., in May 2000. Melissa Friesen ’94 is assistant professor of theater and communication at Bluffton (Ohio) College. Tanya A. Friesen ’94 is the first woman mechanical punch press operator at the Coleman plant in Maize, Kan. Michael D. Goertzen ’92 teaches physics, chemistry and environmental science at Bethany Christian School in Goshen, Ind. He recently appeared as Pharaoh in the Elkhart (Ind.) Civic Theatre production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Kevin J. Gough ’94 works as a clinical nurse educator at the Denver Health Medical Center. Gough lives in Denver with his wife, Shannon, and a daughter, Hannah. Travis Graber ’97 teaches business classes at McPherson (Kan.) High School. Bernice D. Jantzen ’98 has a one-year voluntary service assignment as a pre-school teacher with Mennonite Central Committee’s SALT international program in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Kenton Kaufman ’92, Liberty, Mo., is a family practice physician with the Excelsior Group. Gretchen Kehrberg ’96 is pursuing a master’s degree in environmental studies with an emphasis in environmental education at the University of Montana in Missoula. Jody W. Lavy ’94 is employed with Intelistaf Healthcare as a traveling registered nurse at Tuality Community Hospital, Hillsboro, Ore. He also works in the intensive care unit. Sheri (Bartel) Lepard ’94 is a sixth-grade special education teacher in Valley Center, Kan. Amy S. (Ulrich) Meeks ’99 is a first-year physician’s assistant student at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Meeks was elected director of internal affairs of the Student Academy of Physician’s Assistants at the annual American Academy of Physicians Assistants conference in Boston last May. Micah Myron ’97 was awarded an Indian Health Service Scholarship for graduate study in social work at the Walla Walla College satellite campus in Billings, Mont. He is employed by Youth Dynamics Inc., an agency that works with mental and physical health concerns of Native American children. Tasneem Nahar ’92 received a master’s degree in development management from American University, Washington, D.C., this past summer. For the last two years, Nahar has been living in Bombay, India, where he has worked with Catholic Relief Services as an emergency coordinator of rehabilitation work. James E. Nestle ’94 works as a staff nurse in the emergency department of Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Boston. Stephen F. Obold Eshleman ’96 is in his second year of a master of divinity program at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Ind. William J. Ortman ’99 led 78 singers, a pianist and an organist in the premiere performance of his 70-minute, four-movement oratorio, “Jesus the Man, the Christ,” at Salem-Zion Mennonite Church, Freeman, S.D., last August. Michael G. Regier ’92 works at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, as an HIV/AIDS case manager. Previously, he was a family counselor and sexual abuse specialist at the St. Louis County Family Court. Tamara A. Sawatzky ’98 graduated last May from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Ind., with a master of arts degree in theological studies with a concentration in church history and the arts. Miner Seymour ’91 owns and operates the Old Settlers Inn, Moundridge, Kan., a concert series that is in its 10th season. Ezra Sigwela ’91 is a member of the national parliament in South Africa. Liberty M. Spencer ’99 graduated with a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Kansas in Lawrence last May. James M. Unruh ’91 is pastor of Faith Mennonite Church in South Hutchinson, Kan. Unruh and his wife, Heidi, have an adopted son, Maurice. Guiyun Zhou ’95 works at the Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. She is pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania–Philadelphia. 2000-09Tonya C. (Keim) Bartel ’01 is director of theater at Hesston (Kan.) College, where she also teaches a fine arts theater class. Doug DeGroot ’01 made his pro football debut and was named defensive player of the game in the Wichita (Kan.) Stealth win over the Fresno (Calif.) Frenzy at the Kansas Coliseum on June 8. Amy L. (Fuqua) Flaming ’01 teaches first grade at Sunset Elementary School, Newton, Kan. Sheryl D. Fowler ’01 teaches world history and international relations at Valley Center (Kan.) High School. Stacey K. Goering ’02 teaches special education at Chisholm Middle School, Newton, Kan. Jacob G.
