Building a Legacy: A family of Lutherans follows a cousin to Bethel College

Iona Applegate of Arlington never went to college—but she’s building a legacy at Bethel anyway.

This past spring, Applegate came to campus for Grandparents’ Day to visit her granddaughter Kate Larson, a sophomore from Clay Center. Kate is the fifth of Applegate’s grandchildren to attend Bethel College. “Grandma has been here every year since [my cousin] Chad started coming,” Kate says.

I have sung “In lonely mountain ways” (#560 in Hymnal: A Worship Book) at Wednesday night hymn sings in the chapel every week for the past four years. It has been a constant in my life, whether I’m singing on pitch, feeling embraced by the community, full of love for others and for God or whether I’m having one of those weeks where continuous breathing seems miraculous, where I cannot hold the alto line, where it’s all I can do to swallow tears and stand silently. By accompanying me through joy and agony, #560 has become a sacred text.
