- Senior nursing students Anna Quiring, Newton, and Amita Shrestha, North Newton, were inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International nursing honor society, and Quiring was named Bethel’s 2011 Iota Chi Excellence in Scholarship Award winner for having the highest GPA in the 2011 nursing class.
- A new endowed chair at Bethel College recognizes John McCabe-Juhnke’s ’78 “life in performance” at Bethel and beyond. McCabe-Juhnke, professor of communication arts and director of forensics, received the Nelson W. ’16A and Gladys I. Krehbiel Distinguished Chair in Speech and Forensics in a special ceremony Nov. 19.
- Bethel College has been named a Champions of Character Five Star Institution by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), meaning it scored 60 or more out of a possible 100 points based on Champions of Character’s five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
- Bethel College has signed its third articulation agreement – the second this school year – with a two-year college. On Nov. 22, Bethel President Perry D. White and Vice President for Academic Affairs Brad Born ’84 traveled to Concordia to sign the agreement with Cloud County Community College to help facilitate transfer for CCCC students who want to continue their education and obtain a four-year degree. In September, Bethel and Hutchinson Community College signed a similar agreement. Bethel had previously formalized one with Hesston College.
- After four years of competing at the annual National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) regional meeting, senior Joshua Powell, a tenor vocalist from Basehor, earned first place in the Senior Men’s Classical division. The NATS West Central Regional Conference and Student Auditions were held this year at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Nov. 6-7.
- Audra Miller, sophomore from Hesston, was one of 19 finalists in the Midwest Regional Collegiate Scholarship Competition, sponsored annually by Fine Art Finals, which organizes regional competitions for high school and college artists. In addition to Kansas, the Midwest Region covers Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Miller, a student of Rachel Epp Buller ’96, adjunct professor of art, submitted three pieces, receiving notice for a colored pencil drawing (see above).
- Senior Allison Kaster, Wichita, received one of two $500 scholarships awarded each semester by the Kansas State Council of the Emergency Nurses Association to support emergency nursing as a profession.
- Erica Buller, junior from Lenexa, had a paper accepted for an April 23 art history conference hosted by Baker University, Baldwin City. Buller based the paper on her summer 2010 project as part of a Bethel undergraduate research grant, in which she explored the field of museum studies by visiting museums and galleries and interviewing museum professionals and by working on a catalog of the artworks in the Rainbow Mennonite Church collection in Kansas City, Kan.
- At the end of the regular season, Bethel had qualified 12 students – including four freshmen – in 17 slots (nine different events) for the American Forensic Association-National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET), April 1-4 at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Two additional students qualified as alternates.
