- Andrea Nickel, Windsor, Colo., was one of 150 women from North America whom Google accepted into its Feb. 21-23 Workshop for Women Engineers, held at the Google-plex in Mountain View, Calif. Nickel graduated May 25.
- Bethel College swept the 7th annual Anabaptist research paper competition sponsored by the Sider Institute at Messiah College, Grantham, Pa. First place went to Jordan Penner, Reedley, Calif. Meredith Lehman, sophomore from Bluffton, Ohio, took second prize, and Peter Miller, Partridge, won third prize. Penner also became the 21st Bethel student to take first place in a statewide Kansas Association of Historians- sponsored paper competition. Penner and Miller graduated May 25.
- John McCabe-Juhnke ’78 received the 2008 Carroll and Barbara Hickey Distinguished Service Award from District III of the American Forensic Association. Forensic student competitors select the award winner, a director of forensics from the region comprising Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.
- Jeff Buller, Inman, repeated his national championship in javelin, throwing 214’ 8” to take first place at the NAIA Nationals May 22 in Edwardsville, Ill. Buller graduated May 25. Garrett Hiebert, freshman from Goessel, placed 6th with a throw of 194’ 7” that earned him All-American status. David Daugharthy, sophomore from Iola, finished 9th at 190’ 5”. The three finished the regular season on top in their event in the KCAC and ranked second, seventh and 13th, respectively, in the nation. Bethel track and field coach Tracy Tuttle was named 2008 NAIA Region IV Coach of the Year.
- Paige McKinney, sophomore from Newton, was designated the International Tennis Association Player to Watch for 2008-09, an award given to only one player nationally each year. McKinney was named to the NAIA All-American 2nd Team for women’s tennis. She finished the year ranked 15th nationally, the highest ranked Bethel College player ever. She was a unanimous 1st Team KCAC selection and was named KCAC Newcomer of the Year and Most Valuable Player. The women’s tennis team finished the season second in the KCAC and won the KCAC Tournament championship.
- Wayne Wiens ’58, professor of biology, received the 2008 J.O. and Esther Schrag Helping Hand Award. Christine Crouse-Dick, assistant professor of communication arts, was selected to receive the Ralph P. Schrag Distinguished Teaching Award.
- Nathaniel Yoder, junior from Kalona, Iowa, and a member of Kalona Mennonite Church, is exploring pastoral ministry through the Ministry Inquiry Program by serving in his home congregation this summer. Bethel College has had at least one student in MIP every year since the program’s inception – at Bethel – in 1987.
