- (Above) Ada Mae Haury taught in Bethel College’s speech department from 1965-83 and was the first Bethel professor named to emeritus status, in 1989. Long before she came to Bethel, however, she taught speech and debate at Russell High School. - The Thresher golf team completed its most successful season ever, finishing third in regular-season play and third in both the KCAC and NAIA Region IV championships. In his fourth season as coach, Gregg Dick ’87 was named KCAC co-Coach of the Year and NAIA Region IV Coach of the Year.
- Bethel’s forensics squad finished 32nd at the AFA-NIET (American Forensic Association- National Individual Events Tournament), held this year at Mankato (Minn.) State University. Bethel placed fourth in District III, the five-state region in which it competes, and second among Kansas schools (trailing only Kansas State University) and is the top Mennonite school in the nation.
- For the third time, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) has recognized Bethel College for the high number of science majors who go on to earn M.D. and/or Ph.D. degrees in the sciences. Bethel was also recognized in 1996 and 2003. The HHMI has identified U.S. colleges and universities in this way every four years since 1996. No other four-year college or master’s degree-granting university in the state of Kansas has received the honor.
- Tricia Lopez, administrative assistant in the social work and teacher education departments, was the 2007 winner of the J.O. and Esther Schrag Helping Hand Award. Lopez was nominated by a number of students, all of whom noted her unfailing care for and helpfulness to them.
- Jeff Buller, senior from Inman, is the 2007 NAIA champion in javelin. He threw 216’03”, breaking his own school record and beating out the second-place throw by more than seven feet, at the NAIA Championships held May 24-26 at Fresno (Calif.) Pacific University. Bethel freshman David Daugharthy, Iola, threw his personal best of 196’07” to finish sixth. Both athletes earned All-American status for their efforts.
