- D.C. Wedel '33 (above) was Bethel College's sixth president, serving from 1952-59. He is also Bethel's oldest living president, turning 99 March 16. Some staff and administrators from the college went to Bethesda Mennonite Home in Goessel, where Wedel has only recently moved, to celebrate with him. Pictured with Wedel are, from left Brenda '84 and Barry Bartel '84, current Bethel president; Dave Linscheid '75, director of Alumni Relations; and advancement and development staff Fred Goering '72, Cindy Beth '80, Mary Regier '72 and Sondra Bandy Koontz '70. Incidentally, Wedel officiated at the wedding of Mary and Lon Regier in 1973.
- In his first year as head volleyball coach, Chad Schilling ’06 was named 2006 KCAC Volleyball Coach of the Year. The Threshers finished tied for second in the conference with a 14-4 conference record and overall record of 25-8, the best since the 2000 season.
- Bethel College was one of only seven Kansas colleges and one of only two private liberal arts insitutions in the state to be recognized recently as part of the first-ever President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
- The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) named five Bethel College students Daktronics All-America Scholar- Athletes: Bethany Trimble, senior from Clyde, and Heather Palmateer, junior from Topeka, volleyball; Braden Hiebner, senior from Hampton, Neb., men’s soccer; and Robin Montano, senior from Newton, and Jessica Yocum, senior from Sedgwick, women’s soccer.
- The nursing class of 2008 – the largest ever admitted to Bethel College – held the traditional lamplighting for juniors Feb. 11. Fifty (one in absentia) students participated; the original admission group numbered 60. Director of nursing Gregg Schroeder ’92 noted this class is also one of the most diverse in Bethel’s history, including nine men and 18 students who are foreign-born.
- Dwight Krehbiel ’69, professor of psychology, was one of 25 college and university faculty nationwide to be recently named a BiosciEdNet (BEN) Scholar or Mentor. He attended the BEN National Leadership Training Institute in Washington, D.C., Dec. 7-10. The institute gave the BEN Scholars access to and experience with digital libraries and resources.
