Brad S. Born ’84, academic dean and vice president for academic affairs. Born, an associate professor of English, has taught at Bethel since 1995 and has been interim academic dean and vice president for academic affairs since fall 2005.
Alissa Randa Cyphers ’98, Web editor. She has a B.A. from Bethel College and most recently served as an editor for The Decorative Painter, the magazine of the Society of Decorative Painters, Wichita.

Allen Jantz ’84, associate professor of education, participated in the Kansas State Department of Education program review process Oct. 24-25, 2006. He reviewed the grades 6-12 mathematics programs for Kansas Wesleyan University, McPherson College and Newman University and the middle level mathematics program for Newman.

Jim Pisano, assistant professor of music, performed with the Jazz Heritage Orchestra in September and October in northern Ohio; at Amazing Things Arts Center in Framingham, Mass., and Concord (N.H.) Community Music School in November 2006; at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, part of Lincoln Center, Dec. 5-9, 2006; with Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Nancy Wilson at Severance Hall, Cleveland; and at Jardine’s, a jazz venue in Kansas City, Mo., in January. He was part of the orchestra for the Wichita Grand Opera’s production of Verdi’s La Traviata Dec. 2, 2006. He played with jazz percussionist Neil Shilansky as part of the CD release tour for Shilansky’s Something I Know on which Pisano is a featured soloist.
Karen Bauman Schlabaugh, professor of music, performed with clarinetist Suzanne Tirk in her faculty recital at Wichita State University Oct. 22, 2006, and on a work by Charles Ruggiero, Nov. 9, 2006, for WSU’s American Music Week.
Richard Tirk, assistant professor of music, was the trumpet soloist for Hesston High School’s Fall Concert. He and Karen Bauman Schlabaugh, professor of music, did a mini-tour in Colorado in January, performing at the University of Denver, Denver School for the Arts and Beth-El Mennonite Church in Colorado Springs. Tirk led a master class with trumpet students at the University of Denver and worked with the orchestra at Denver School for the Arts and the wind ensemble at Loveland (Colo.) High School.

Chuck Regier ’81, Kauffman Museum curator of exhibits, led an all-day workshop on exhibit design, and Andi Schmidt Andres ’84, Kauffman Museum curator of education, and Barb Goering ’83, Goessel Grade School teacher, led a session built on their experiences with the traveling exhibit “K is for Kansas,” at the Kansas Museums Association annual meeting in Hays Nov. 1-3, 2006.
Dale Schrag ’69, director of Church Relations, led a four-part series on “Anabaptist Visions/ Mennonite Realities” at First Mennonite Church, Newton, in February 2006; Faith Mennonite Church, Newton, in November; and Eden Mennonite Church, Moundridge, in January. He did a two-part version at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church, Inman, in September 2006. He presented “The ambiguity of Anabaptist martyrdom: The story of Michael Sattler” Feb. 18, as part of a public lecture at Lorraine Avenue Mennonite Church, Wichita, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Allen Jantz ’84, associate professor of education, transitioned into the role of president of Kansas Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (KACTE) July 1, 2006. In conjunction with this, he attended the Summer Leadership Institute hosted by the parent organization, American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, July 8-10, 2006 in Minneapolis, Minn. Also as part of this role, he coordinated and hosted the KACTE fall meeting in Emporia Oct. 27, 2006. He served as visiting team chair for the Kansas North Central Association visit to the Remington Public Schools Nov. 6, 2006.
John McCabe-Juhnke ’78, professor of communication arts, served as an external reviewer for the Baker University communication program, Jan. 22-23, in Baldwin City.
Rachel Pannabecker ’80, director of Kauffman Museum, chaired the Kansas Museums Association (KMA) Institutional Projects Grant Committee, which awarded competitive grants to five Kansas museums at the KMA annual meeting, Nov. 1-3, 2006.
Karen Bauman Schlabaugh, professor of music, completed a four-year term as chair of the Pre-College Auditions for the Kansas Music Teachers Association. She organized and ran all levels (274 participants) of the pre-college state auditions Nov. 11, 2006 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
Richard Tirk, assistant professor of music, served as the clinician for the South Central Kansas Music Education Association Middle School Honor Band Nov. 4, 2006.
