Directions to Memorial Grove Trailhead

From the north or south via I-135
Take Exit 34 (K-15, North Newton/Abilene) and proceed south to 29th Street, just south of Thresher Stadium. Turn left on 29th. Proceed past the parking lot and tennis courts. Follow the road to the right, and then left, past the old campus granary, until you see the Memorial Grove gazebo, fire pit and gravel parking area with the wooden "Plainsman" sculpture to the left. A trailhead is located just south of Memorial Grove. Overflow parking is available just east of the tennis courts, with a paved walk leading to Memorial Grove. See the campus map (look for #22 Memorial Grove and #26 Sand Creek Trail).

From the north via K-15
Go under the interstate, proceed to 29th Street and continue as directed in "From the north or south via I-135."

From the west via Highway 50
Take Highway 50 on the south side of Newton. Get on I-135 N (U.S. 50 E, Emporia/U.S. 81 N, Salina). Proceed north on I-135 to Exit 34 (K-15, North Newton/Abilene), then continue as directed in "From the north or south via I-135."

From the east via Highway 50
Pass through Walton. Proceed several miles to the exit for Newton and 12th Street. Take this exit — do not take the ramp to I-135 south to Wichita. The 12th Street exit will take you to Old Trail Road 1200. Follow Old Trail Road 1200 to 12th Street and turn right on 12th. Proceed on 12th Street (west) to the traffic light at K-15 (Main Street). Turn right (north) on K-15 and proceed to 29th Street, just south of Thresher Stadium. Continue as directed in "From the north or south via I-135."
Other Access Points
The trail has several other access points throughout Newton and North Newton. Nicknamed the "Trail of Two Cities," the hiker-biker trail that runs alongside Sand Creek through Newton between First Street and Centennial Park connects with a trail between Centennial Park and Sand Creek Trail at the Memorial Grove trailhead.Hours
Hours for Sand Creek Trail are sunrise to sunset. Memorial Grove hours are flexible; it may be reserved for small groups by calling (316) 284-5878 or e-mailing Ben Jones.Rules
Your help is needed in maintaining a facility that can be enjoyed by the entire community.
- Treat the vegetation, signage and physical infrastructure with respect.
- Use the trail on a "pack it in, pack it out basis," leaving nothing other than your footprints. If you see litter, please pick it up.
- Pets are welcome, but please keep all pets on leashes and dispose of all pet waste.
- Use mountain bikes in a responsible, non-destructive manner. Motorized vehicles are prohibited.
- Do not use firearms of any type on or near the trail.
