| Saludos en el nombre de Cristo. Es un placer estar aquí con ustedes esta noche. It is a pleasure to be with you this evening. I have enjoyed getting to know Esther Vazquez over the past year, and to share this presentation with her this evening truly is an honor for me. Please take a chance to welcome her to her first conference, and I thank her for helping with the translation of my remarks tonight. |
| Estoy contento de tener esta oportunidad venir en la presencia de Dios a través de la iglesia reunida. Gracias por mostrarnos esto a nosotros. | I welcome this opportunity to come into the presence of God through the gathered church. We are doing something different this evening to celebrate the changing face of the Western District and South Central Conferences. I am speaking in Spanish; I hope you realized that! Let me confess that I know that my Spanish is not perfect, and that I have a heavy accent. I take it as an expression of graciousness and generosity that those of you whose first language is Spanish participate in this way this evening. Indeed, this is a kind of hospitality that you have not always been shown in this country, and even in our church. Thank you for modeling it for us. |
| He estudiado y reflectado en nuestra Escritura para esta conferencia, y como he tenido la experiencia de la llamado de Dios en nuestras vidas, cinco cosas han resultado que me gustaría compartir. | As I have studied and reflected on our Scripture for this conference, and as I have experienced God’s call in our lives, five points emerged that I would like to share. |
| Primero, estar en contacto con Dios y la Iglesia es el primer paso para preguntarle a Dios que hable. I Samuel 3 verso 3 dice que Samuel estaba durmiendo en el templo del Señor. La Escritura dice que “la lámpara de Dios todavía no se apaga,” diciendo que tal vez era en la madrugada, antes de salir el sol. Samuel había despertado por la madrugada y no podía dormir. ¡Todos podemos consolarnos al saber que no durmiendo en la madrugada es Bíblica! ¡Ala mejor puede ser una inspiración! | First, staying in touch with God and the Church is the first step of asking God to speak. I Samuel 3 verse 3 says that Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the Lord. Scripture says that “the lamp of God had not yet gone out,” meaning that it was likely early in the morning, just before sunrise. Samuel had awakened early and couldn’t get back to sleep. We can all take comfort in knowing that not sleeping early in the morning is Biblical! It might just be inspired! |
| En el caso de Samuel, fue posible ser una inspiración porque estaba en el templo, estaba activo, él se había estado cerca de Dios y la Iglesia. En un modo él ya había invitado a Dios en ese momento para que le hablara. Eso no quiere decir que Dios no te busque si te retiras, pero Samuel nos enseña que estando activos es un modo de invitar a Dios que nos hable mientras buscamos ser fieles. | In Samuel’s case, it could be inspired because he was there at the temple, he was engaged, he had stayed close to God and the Church. In a way he had invited God to speak to him already at that point. That is not to say that God won’t seek you out if you distance yourself, but Samuel shows us that being engaged is a way to invite God to speak as we seek to be faithful. |
| Segundo, escuchar a Dios incluye escuchar a los demás. Samuel no escuchó a Dios al principio. El despertó temprano, y él sabía que había escuchado una voz, tal vez se sintió inquieto al darse vueltas en la cama. Pero él no escuchó a Dios, él ni siquiera podía oír a Dios, hasta que Eli le ayudó a comprender que Dios estaba hablando. Samuel did not hear God at first. He awoke early, he knew he heard a voice, he may even have felt unsettled as he tossed and turned. But he didn’t hear God, he couldn’t even listen for God, until Eli helped him realize God was speaking. We have experienced that kind of gentle nudging, and have sought out the counsel of others, when we needed help discerning what made sense. When might you listen for God, or when might you help someone else realize that God is speaking to him or her? |
| Tercero, escuchar a Dios ala mejor es ser atrevido y tomar los riesgos. La paz de Dios, la voz de Dios puede ser un mensaje confortante que estás donde Dios te ha llamado a estar. No hay nada malo oír la voz de Dios asegurando que ya estás donde Dios quiere que estés. Pero quizás eso es lo que la mayoría de nosotros esperamos y estamos escuchando, y por eso pensamos que es eso lo que escuchamos. | Third, hearing God may involve being bold and taking risks. God’s peace, God’s voice may be a reassuring message that you are where God has called you to be. There is nothing wrong with hearing that reassuring voice from God that you are where God wants you to be. But that may be what most of us hope for and are listening for, so we may too easily think that is what we hear. |
| Regresamos de Bolivia en 2003 comprometidos como una familia para estarnos en el área de Denver por lo menos por diez años. ¡Después de acostumbrarnos a la área, recuerdo que estaba predicando un sermón en nuestra iglesia en Denver cuando nos estábamos sintiendo estables en el área. Expliqué como si se siente cómodo y seguro debe de tener cuidado porque Dios puede agarrarte desprevenido y aventarte un baso de agua fría en la cara! ¿Como es esa imagen de Dios? Pero he pensado que estaba predicando a ellos. Nos resistimos movernos a Bethel, pero con tiempo empezamos a ver que Dios nos llegó de sorpresa por atrás de nosotros y nos aventó un baso de agua fría en la cara. | We returned from Bolivia in 2003 with a clear commitment as a family to stay in the Denver area for at least ten years. After settling in the area, I recall preaching a sermon in our church in Denver when we were starting to feel settled in the area. I explained how, if you are comfortable and feeling secure, you better be careful, because God may sneak up behind you and throw a glass of cold water in your face! How is that for an image of God? But I thought I was preaching to them! Although we resisted a move to Bethel, over time we began to realize that we had experienced God sneaking up behind us and throwing a glass of cold water in our face. |
| ¿Que se significa para la iglesia ser tan atrevidos y tomar riesgos? ¿Hay decisiones y direcciones que la Conferencia de Western District o South Central ocupan de hacer este fin de semana o en los meses siguientes que requiere afirmar el liderazgo ser atrevido, y que requiere que seamos amables mientras los líderes tratan de saber que quiere decir eso? | What does it mean for the church to be bold and daring, to take risks? Are there decisions and directions that the Western District or South Central Conference need to make this weekend or in the coming months that require affirming leadership to be bold on our behalf, and that require us to be gracious as leaders figure out just what that means? |
| Cuarto, aunque escuchar a Dios puede incluir ser atrevido y riesgoso, una iglesia paciente, afirmada, y graciosa hará mejor las cosas para un líder escuchar a la llamada de Dios. Nosotros servimos con CCM en Bolivia por cinco años. Mi trabajo en Bolivia incluía relacionar con las iglesias Menonitas por todo Sudamérica, así que comunicación fue un desafío. Pero la gente fue muy amable. Ya expliqué como un pastor en Argentina fue muy amable cuando él me preguntó en frente de su congregación si yo estaba casado y yo confundí la palabra “cansado” con “casado” y contesté “no mucho” – que yo “no estaba muy casado.” El pastor y la congregación amablemente dejaron pasar mi error sin hacerme sentir mal. Esa amabilidad nos dejó hacer fuerte y riesgoso mientras entrábamos una cultura nueva y buscábamos ser discípulos fieles. | Fourth, while hearing God may involve being bold and taking risks, a patient, affirming, and gracious church will make it easier for leaders to hear God’s call. We served with MCC in Bolivia for five years. My role in Bolivia involved relating to the Mennonite churches through South America, so communication was a real challenge. But people were very patient. I have described how a pastor in Argentina was very gracious when he asked me in front of church if I was married, and I mistook the word “tired” for “married,” and said “not very much” – that I was “not very much married.” The pastor and the congregation graciously slid over my mistake without making me feel bad. That graciousness allowed and enabled us to do something bold and daring as we entered a new culture and sought to be faithful disciples. |
| Es interesante que los escolares piensen que Samuel tenía como 12 años cuando el caso I Samuel 3 ocurrió, y como dice el verso 19, “El Señor estaba con Samuel cuando estaba creciendo.” El fue llamado de joven, y no hay duda que los que lo rodeaban eran pacientes y amables mientras que maduraba. Me acuerdo del pasaje de Jesús en el templo en Mateo 2 en donde la Escritura graba que, después de oír a los maestros, Jesús “creció en sabiduría y maduro.” ¿Que quiere decir para la iglesia ser atrevidos, y tomar riesgos, y también ser amable con esos que son llamados a ser líderes? | It is interesting that scholars think Samuel was about 12 years old when the account in I Samuel 3 occurred, and then according to verse 19, “the Lord was with Samuel as he grew up.” He was called in his youth, and no doubt those around him were patient and gracious with him as he matured. It reminds me of the account of Jesus at the temple in Matthew 2 in which the Scripture records that, after listening to the teachers, Jesus “grew in wisdom and stature.” What does it mean for the church to be bold and daring, to take risks, and also to be gracious with those called out for leadership? |
| ¡Quinto, oír a Dios se trata de realmente escucharlo! Tal vez es muy obvio, pero pienso que puede ser el aspecto más difícil de lo que nos puede enseñar la experiencia de Samuel. Nosotros vemos la humildad como una virtud, pero yo sospecho que muchas veces confundimos la humildad con reticencia. This may seem obvious, but I think it may be the most difficult aspect of what Samuel’s experience can teach us. We see humility as a virtue, but I suspect that too often we confuse humility with unwillingness. How often do we say “I can’t do that!” It seems to me that the true humility we should seek is not in declaring what we can not do; rather true humility comes in being willing to say “Speak Lord.” The difficulty is that, if we ask God to speak, we are committed to listening to what God says! It is profound that, for Samuel, the next step after asking God to speak was not to proclaim, but to listen. Do we sometimes miss God’s call because we miss that step? Do we sometimes commit to ask God to speak because we think we know what God will say and we want to proclaim it, rather than commit to ask God to speak so that we can truly listen? |
| Mi esposa, Brenda y yo hemos tenido la experiencia de que Dios nos ha guiado a lugares que estiran nuestros talentos, nuestros intelectos, y nuestros seres humanos. Hemos tratado de estar cerca de Dios y la Iglesia. Cuando nos encontramos resistiendo el cambio a Bolivia, y resistiendo la invitación de considerar la presidencia de Bethel, les podemos confesar que no sabíamos si Dios nos estaba guiando a esa posición si no hubiéramos entrado el proceso de discernimiento. Ese proceso implica escuchar a otros para que nos ayudaran a entender la voz de Dios. Esto incluía salir afuera de nuestra zona confortable, tomar riesgos, y nuestras experiencias nos han confirmado el sentido de ser llamados. Hemos experimentado amabilidad y paciencia. | My wife, Brenda and I have experienced God leading us to places that stretched our skills, our intellects, and our beings. We have tried to stay close to God and the Church. When we felt ourselves resisting a move to Bolivia, and resisting the invitation to consider the Bethel presidency, we ultimately confessed that we could not know if God was leading us to that position if we didn’t enter into a process of discernment. That process involved listening to others so they could help us understand the voice of God. It involved stepping outside of our comfort zone, taking risks, and our experience has confirmed for us our sense of being called. We have experienced graciousness and patience. |
| ¡Que ustedes también tengan la experiencia de Dios guiando en sus vidas como todos individualmente y como una iglesia invitamos a Dios que nos hable, porque estamos escuchando! Amen. | May you also experience God’s leading in your lives as we individually and as a church invite God to speak, for we are listening! Amen. |
