Neuroscience

Bethel offers a neuroscience certificate that is based in existing psychology and biology departments and majors, whereas some institutions have chosen to create a separate major. Our program highlights the central role of each of these disciplines within neuroscience. We provide a variety of research opportunities for students in both cognitive neuroscience and neurobiology — considerably more than are available to students at many other institutions.

Students in neuroscience need experience in writing, reading and searching the scholarly literature, data analysis, computing and conducting empirical research independently. They also need a broad knowledge of philosophical and scientific issues that arise in the study of mind and brain. A liberal arts education as it exists at Bethel is the ideal means for acquiring these skills and these forms of knowledge. As such, students are able to understand neuroscience as situated within a broad framework rather than as a narrow specialty.
